Three recent conferences in the USA and Canada of prominent Islamic
scholars and experts in lunar visibility unanimously adopted
resolutions. The main highlights are:
-
Islamic dates, especially of
Ramadan and Eidain, will be determined solely by the actual
sighting of a crescent moon, by naked eye, after the sunset,
as the Qur’an, and Sunnah require.
-
A select committee of Islamic
scholars and astronomical experts will evaluate all reported
claims of moon-sighting received from within 48 contiguous
US states and Canada by an agreed upon criteria (as
adopted).
-
The Committee will announce
its final decision within four hours of the sunset on the
East coast.
The main achievements of the
conference were agreements on a verifiable sighted moon to begin
the Islamic month, minimum criteria to verify the Shahadah, and
a network of decision-makers. |
